The Global Design & Innovation Team is a diverse community with a broad set of expertise in Consumer Insights, Innovation, Footwear Design, Apparel Design, Accessory Design, Color Design, Graphic Design, Material Design, and Design Operations. We work collaboratively across the Converse brand in order to deliver meaningful concepts to our consumer in brand, product and experience.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for a Design Director who will inspire a team of designers to apply outstanding design skills to build original, style-led graphics and print/patterns for our apparel, accessories and footwear lines. This role must demonstrate creative excellence, understanding both the art and science of graphic and print/pattern creation. Through continued research and consumer connection, this role will be able to quickly anticipate and identify key trends that translate into significant products that resonate with our consumers and will respond to business objectives with creative design solutions aligned to consumer insights. This role will set graphic and print/pattern direction, supervise all graphics SKUs across footwear, apparel and accessories, with an emphasis on tees. Excellent communication skills will be critical with teammates across the organization, including listening, collaborative problem solving & deep emotional intelligence. The role demands big picture thinking and strong leadership capabilities with regards to product relevance, product positioning, timing & collections.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

If this is you, you’ll be working within the CGM function, researching and setting Graphic direction alongside Color and Materials partners. You will be responsible for content inputs to seasonal direction as well as presenting at key moments in our calendar. You will elevate the consumer experience through outstanding product craft and push the limits of graphic and print/pattern design. You will lead your team with soft skills; coaching, mentoring, influencing and goal setting in alignment with the department and functional goals to develop their skills and grow their careers. You will ensure key product creation process dates/gates are met, design tools are effectively applied, and cross-functional partnership occurs appropriately. You will guide your team to create consumer relevant original concepts that appropriately reflect Converse’s Design Ethos and our Creative Direction. You will lead a team that will be working across categories within Apparel, Accessories and Footwear and spanning across multiple timelines of creation. You will connect across geographies to ensure we are maintaining a Converse tone of voice in graphics and print/pattern across the globe. You will maintain healthy cross-functional relationships and build matrix relationships outside of immediate team. You will demonstrate curiosity and proactively enhance business acuity. You will strive to continuously improve the Central Graphics function, identifying ways to work smarter, gain more insights and position the brand competitively in the market.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

You will report to the Senior Creative Director of Color, Graphics, Materials and work alongside Design Leadership when setting seasonal direction. You will work closely with the Central Graphics Studio Manager, who will support operationally to streamline work flow, deadlines, team capacity and explore process improvements. Our style is highly collaborative, so you will liaise with Product Merchandising, Developers and adjacent business partners. You will also partner globally with our geographies and across Nike Inc where vital. This position has direct reports, who you will work with daily and can be inclusive of working with outside contractors and artists.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher or combination of relevant education, experience and training
  • 8+ years of proven experience, demonstrating expert level knowledge of Graphic and Print/Pattern Design, both the creation of and the technical ability of preparing art for manufacturing
  • Ability to provide experience and training that maintains the highest level of competency among designers, prior experience with direct reports is preferred
  • Strategic thinking and visioning, understands product relevance, positioning, timing and collections
  • Ability to effectively communicate creative vision and direction to the team and partners
  • Experienced level understanding of Consumer Insights and trend
  • Ability to travel as needed
